Staying Self-Motivated

Dear Vibrant Young Mind,

Self-motivation is a trait to help you lead your career and life. Be the source of your own inspiration.

What is self-motivation? In simple terms it is the force that drives you to do things. It is an important life skill that portrays the ability to keep on going even while facing hardships, to take up new opportunities, and to show determination in achieving goals. Our motivation is responsible for deciding whether we want to build a growth mindset or fixed mindset. Staying self motivated is the framework to developing our character and personality as people.

Why do we say self-motivation is important? It is the ability to look at life in a positive aspect. It enables us to overcome challenges and develop an attitude to learn from our failures. When we are self-motivated we tend to be more independent, organized, and always give our best. Being self-motivated is a necessary factor on the road to success. Success is not completely dependent on talent, it depends on the motivation to stay committed at attaining our passion.

“Work hard in silence, Let success make the noise” - Frank Ocean

Sometimes we may wonder how entrepreneurs and leaders put in effort to turn their goals into a reality. This is because they have turned self-motivation into a habit. It is no longer an action done unwillingly, it comes naturally to them to be strong willed and with a sense of purpose. A person’s motivation is their freedom to work with intention. If we want to achieve something we must build the power to take control, otherwise you are just being strung along without a motive.

Self-motivation is a necessary skill that will help us build good character and persistence, but how do we do this? Sometimes even the most motivated people can find it challenging to consistently stay inspired. Here are a few ways in which the mind can slowly be trained to develop a push:

1. See the good in the bad
Whenever you encounter any obstacles, make it a habit to always think ahead with a positive energy. Building your internal mental strength can be one of your biggest advantages to keep the motivation running.
2. Start simple
Work in a comfortable setting. Stay in a quiet location that acts as a trigger to bring a spark to complete the task. Whether it is a quiet setting or moving around, find the action that provokes your mind to stay focused.
3. Set realistic goals
Follow the SMART goals technique. Make sure the goals you set are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-based. Set small checkpoints to approach different achievements.

It is hard to stay self-motivated. We ask ourselves whether what we are doing is necessary or if it will create an impact. Our minds prefer to stay lethargic and procrastinate rather than working to sustain progress. At times like these we must always remember to always push yourself, because nobody else is going to do it for you.
